-The transformation of agricultural systems is one of the key challenges of the 21st century. In the face of climate change, resource scarcity, and biodiversity loss, profound changes are needed that go beyond isolated technological innovations. This ILS-Working Paper demonstrates how the funding measure “Agricultural Systems of the Future” initiated by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) develops integrative approaches that combine ecological, economic, and societal dimensions.

-It focuses on four transformation pathways that provide a shared orientation for research, knowledge transfer, and implementation. Together, they represent strategic entry points for systemic change, linking innovation, governance, and societal engagement. These pathways link scientific insights with practical applications and promote collaboration between science, industry, policy, and civil society. The aim is to shape sustainable, resilient, and equitable agrifood systems.
