Urban research − understanding urban change in its diversity
The process of urbanisation in the early 21st century is enormously dynamic: Urban spaces emerge, grow and change, their transformation takes many forms and is increasingly discontinuous and disparate. A better understanding of these processes is a central concern for the spatial urban researchers at the ILS. We investigate the various dimensions of urban change at different levels of scale and in international comparison. In active dialogue with practitioners, policy-makers and societal stakeholders, we gain important insights from this for the sustainable transformation and design of urban spaces.
We have three main research interests.

Abschlussbericht: Innovative, nachhaltige Mobilitätskonzepte in Neubausiedlungen und Konversionsflächen
Was sind die Chancen und Hemmnissen der autoreduzierten Quartiersentwicklung? Der Abschlussbericht des vom BMBF geförderten Projektes „Nachhaltige Mobilität in Lincoln II (NaMoLi II): Implementierung innovativer nachhaltiger Mobilitätskonzepte in Neubausiedlungen und Konversionsflächen am Beispiel der Lincoln-Siedlung in Darmstadt“ befasst sich genau damit. Gemeinsam für „Forschung made in NRW“: Der JRF-Vorstand war auf seiner Sommertour gestern (4. September) zu Besuch bei uns am Brüderweg. Mit Ramona Fels und Prof. Dr. Dieter Bathen haben wir uns über aktuelle Themen des ILS und der JRF ausgetauscht. Die Landwirtschaft von morgen auf der Internationalen Gartenausstellung entdecken
Die „Agrarsysteme der Zukunft“ sind eines von 30 Zukunftsprojekten, die während einer Ausstellung in den Zukunftsgärten zur Internationalen Gartenausstellung (IGA) 2027 im Ruhrgebiet vorgestellt werden. Diese Entscheidung wurde am vergangenen Donnerstag (28. August) beim Regionalen Forum der IGA im Deutschen Bergbaumuseum Bochum bekannt gegeben. Cultivating change: Exploring policies, challenges, and solutions to support city region food systems development in six European countries
Ann-Kristin Steines, Anna Wissman, Kathrin Specht und Chiara Iodice aus der Forschungsgruppe „Raumbezogene Planung und Städtebau“ haben mit weiteren Beteiligten einen Aufsatz in der Zeitschrift „Cities“ veröffentlicht. Der Artikel thematisiert im Zusammenhang mit CFRS (City Region Food System/Ernährungssysteme in Stadtregionen) die Fragen, wie sich (inter-)nationale politische Systeme auf die städtische Lebensmittelproduktion auswirken und wie Interessenvertreter, Forscher und Praktiker die aktuelle Politik auf multinationaler Ebene wahrnehmen und welche Strategien, Herausforderungen und Lösungen es zur Unterstützung der Entwicklung von Ernährungssystemen in Stadtregionen gibt. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cities.2024.105498. Urban-rural migration in Germany: A decision in favour of ‘the rural’ or against ‘the urban’?
ILS-Wissenschaftler*innen Frank Osterhage und Cornelia Tippel haben gemeinsam mit weiteren Kolleg*innen einen Artikel im „Journal of Rural Studies“ veröffentlicht. Darin geht es um die Veränderungen der Binnenwanderung zwischen 2000 und 2021 sowie die mittels einer deutschlandweiten Bevölkerungsbefragung ermittelten Gründe, aus denen Haushalte zwischen Mitte 2015 und Mitte 2020 von städtische in ländliche Gebiete umgezogen sind. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jrurstud.2024.103431. From policies to outcomes: multi-level analysis of the influence of regional planning on land take.
Sebastian Eichhorn aus der Forschungsgruppe „Mobilität und Raum“ hat einen Artikel in der Fachzeitschrift „European Planning Studies“ veröffentlicht. Der Beitrag präsentiert die Ergebnisse einer Mehrebenenanalyse, mit der die Auswirkungen regionaler Planungsvorschriften und lokaler Interessengruppen auf die Flächeninanspruchnahme für Wohnzwecke unter Berücksichtigung unterschiedlicher Kontextfaktoren untersucht wurden. https://doi.org/10.1080/09654313.2024.2412216. Residential self-selection and the relative importance of travel considerations in the residential choice of a car-reduced neighbourhood
Thomas Klinger from the research group “Mobility and Space”, together with Marcus Klein and Martin Lanzendorf from the University of Frankfurt, has published an article in the journal “Transportation Research Part A: Policy and Practice”. It deals with residential self-selection (RSS) when moving to car-reduced neighbourhoods and the importance of travel considerations in residential location choice (TCRC). https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tra.2024.104266. Practising urban agriculture positively influences household organic waste management habits: A quantitative study from Florianópo-lis, Brazil
Together with colleagues from the FoodE consortium, ILS scientist Kathrin Specht has published an article on the topic of “urban agriculture” in the journal “Waste Management & Research”. Based on a quantitative study from Florianópolis (Brazil), the article shows that urban agriculture has a positive effect on the behaviour of households when disposing of organic waste. https://doi.org/10.1177/0734242X241271025. Ländliche Region in Transformation: Chancen und Herausforderungen der Energie- und Mobilitätswende – Regionaltagung
Wie gelingt der Übergang von bisherigen einzelnen Best-Practice-Modellen in die erforderliche umfassende Energie- und Mobilitätswende? Das ist Thema einer digitalen Regionaltagung am 30. und 31. März 2023, die gemeinsam vom Zentrum für ländliche Entwicklung – ZeLE -, dem Institut für Kirche und Gesellschaft, der Evangelischen Akademie im Rheinland sowie dem ILS organisiert wird. Der Beitrag von Mobilstationen für eine regionale Verkehrswende: Abschlussveranstaltung des Projekts „MOST Regio Köln”
Die Forschenden und Praxispartner*innen des Modellvorhabens “MOST RegioKöln – Mobilstationen in der Stadtregion Köln” haben sich intensiv mit Mobilstationen als intermodale Schnittstellen im Umweltverbund auseinandergesetzt. Das Projekt hat die Bedarfe der Nutzer*innen und Anwohner*innen beleuchtet, das Potenzial für die Verlagerung vom privaten Pkw auf den Umweltverbund abgeschätzt und innovative Elemente von Mobilstationen analysiert. Spatial Science Colloquium 2023 – Spatial Development and Digitalisation: Interactions, trends and future pathways
Save the date: The Spatial Science Colloquium will take place on July 4 (online) and July 5 in Berlin. The process of digitization leads to far-reaching changes in society. This is linked to various and sometimes contradictory expectations, hopes and fears with regard to spatial development. After approximately two decades of scientific debates and political strategies on digitization at all levels an interim conclusion on intensive interactions between digitization and spatial development seems urgently needed.
