Suburbanization of Poverty: New Spatial (De)Concentrations of Low-Income and Poor Households in German Urban Regions
Client:German Research Foundation (DFG)
Partner(s):RWTH Aachen University (Prof. Dr. Carmella Pfaffenbach)
Time frame:04/2021 – 09/2023

The research project analyses the spatial distribution of low-income households. Recent housing market developments in German urban regions are characterized by high rents and property prices in central locations. The project investigates whether and to what extent there is a significant increase in low-income households in suburban areas. Internationally, these processes are discussed as suburbanization of poverty.

The aim of this explorative research project is to investigate the suburbanization of poverty and its characteristics in German urban regions. The project will develop hypotheses for further research and test data and methods that enable the monitoring of new spatial (de)concentrations of low-income and poor households. The quantitative analysis in German urban regions will allow to develop assumptions or hypotheses on causes and socio-political challenges of suburbanization. This is followed by in-depth analyses and case studies in selected study regions. The conclusions from this work will be discussed in national and international workshops.

This project is carried out by ILS Research gGmbH.
