The project "FoodE - Food Systems in European Cities" investigates how local and regional food production can be strengthened with innovative methods. Traditionally, local food systems across Europe have been characterised by the intergenerational transfer of practical knowledge as a key strategy for adapting to local conditions, resources and user needs. However, the current food system, mostly industrialised, has largely broken the links between local resources, producers and consumers. In the face of current environmental, social and economic challenges, food systems across Europe also need to be reoriented. This may involve, for example, local food chains that operate sustainably, adapted to regional conditions, existing resources and consumer needs.
The project will identify systemic innovative approaches in the field of nutrition that can improve sustainable food and food security in Europe. This will involve different geographical regions such as coastal, rural and urban areas. Pilot projects will explore the potential for replicability and sustainability of the proposed solutions. Different food stakeholders will be involved in measuring the environmental, social and economic benefits. The research approach based on "Citizen Science" will provide a deep understanding of the needs of the actors involved in local food production, such as producers and consumers, and will contribute to the development of sustainable, citizen-oriented food systems.
Under the leadership of the University of Bologna, the ILS is working on these issues together with a European consortium of 24 partners, including eight research institutions, five cities and municipalities and eleven non-governmental organisations and companies. The project will start in February 2020 and run for 48 months.
In the project, the ILS will, among other things, analyse the planning and political framework conditions for local food production and the roles of the various actors in food production and identify challenges and opportunities for sustainable development.
