Demographic change is causing diverging regional (population) development, even within city regions on a small scale. For instance, within the region of Bremen there are growing as well as shrinking city boroughs. This results in a variety of issues for planning policies: besides vacancies there is also lack of building and housing space. This trend of reginal development puts pressure on planning approaches to cover this spread of small scale developments.
Here, the project WEBWiKo was setting its focus. It has developed methods and tools to support planning with small scale projections of population. Together with a set of municipal partners (region Lower Saxony/Bremen, Statistics Bremen), regio and OFFIS Institute ILS has developed approaches to project population development on grid cell level. The results of the small-scale population projection are further processed in an additional model to plan and evaluate the local demand for social infrastructure (e. g. day care center).
