Urban green spaces play a key role in climate adaptation, biodiversity, and quality of life. The project aimed to develop a standardized nationwide methodology for the remote sensing-based assessment and functional-spatial differentiation of urban green provision in German cities. By integrating remote sensing, geospatial, and thematic data, the project established methods for mapping and monitoring urban greenery in a consistent and comparable way across Germany.
The ILS contributed to the development of a functional-spatial typology of urban green provision and indicators for a nationwide urban green monitoring system. In addition, the institute carried out analyses of population access to urban green spaces and supported the development of a web-based information platform for disseminating project results.
The project provides a robust data foundation for monitoring urban green structures and supports evidence-based urban planning and the development of climate-resilient and liveable cities.
