Unequal North Rhine-Westphalia – Equal Living Conditions for Greater Equity of Opportunity and Strong Future Prospects
Client:Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES), North Rhine-Westphalia Regional Office
Partner(s):RWTH Aachen University
Time frame:12/2020 – 07/2021

Creating equal living conditions is one of the key challenges for regional and spatial development. The project examined socio-economic and spatial disparities across North Rhine-Westphalia and identified regional challenges and opportunities for sustainable development. Based on a comprehensive indicator framework, the study analysed differences in employment, education, prosperity, health, public services, civic participation, and migration dynamics.

The ILS developed an indicator-based regional disparities report and carried out spatial analyses to identify regional patterns and typologies within North Rhine-Westphalia. Building on these findings, the project formulated policy recommendations to promote more equitable living conditions and support future regional transformation processes.

The project provides an evidence base for place-based regional policy and supports policymakers and practitioners in developing strategies that strengthen social equity and future opportunities across North Rhine-Westphalia.

This project is carried out by ILS gGmbH.
